COLLEGE FOOTBALL - CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK - 2k18

COLLEGE FOOTBALL - CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK - 2k18

Three out of four ain’t bad…isn’t that how the song goes?  Well, no matter, here we are.  TOB does not exactly excel at how you say, content generation, so having two weeks’ worth of games to talk about may be for the best interest of everyone.  But first, let’s get to a reader favorite, “Commercial that is currently making TOB laugh”:

The hard candy and the “I’m awake” are spot on.  Well done Progressive, and thanks for the sweet customer service during a recent (read:  2 years ago) fender bender.

Championship week is always a fun time around the TOB household…TOB’s lady goes shopping and TOB walks around Soulard watching random games and trying to avoid blacking out before the sun goes down.  It’s a race I usually (read:  rarely) win.  The good news is, during this black out phase TOB almost never does or says anything stupid to TOB’s lady, causing some icy friction for the next week.  Good times!

Speaking of blacked out, anyone catch that Washington / Utah game last night?  No?  TOB will sum it up…and done!  TOB is a fan of all football, except that.  Gone are the days of Oregon and USC putting up scores like 43-40 in the PAC12 Championship with a Rose Bowl (or National Title) game on the line.  Now it’s two schools waiting to get beat worse than Zack Smith’s wife…speaking of, Urban has been making many more comments recently about his health.  Funny that he only needs some time off during a scandal or an 8-4 season.  When Ohio State or Florida were running through the country winning titles he seemed to be in tip top shape.  Ladies and Gentlemen (mostly gentlemen, TOB has only one female fan, shout out to Sarah Whealen – April Newman, we know you are an imposter simply scanning for shots at TOB’s lady to report back…you’re no Woodward and Bernstein…deepthroat maybe?  Sweet Watergate joke, not getting that on SI.com) on to the games!

A few scenarios could play out here, most of which have Notre Dame in a favorable position to not embarrass themselves and TOB on a national stage.  Let’s run through these along with breaking down the games:

1 – Alabama (-10.5), Clemson (-23.5), Oklahoma (-5.5), and Ohio State (-13) all win.  This is the most likely scenario, and not a bad parlay to take them all.  Even though they are heavy favorites (OU aside) you can probably get even money or better by taking them all.  Do it.  Or don’t do it, but if you do, you owe TOB 10%.  Should this happen, the final four will remain as is with OU jumping into the 4th position.  Solid games from there, OU/BAMA could be 50-45, ND/Clemson could be 17-13.  Definitely a tale of two different games.

2 – Alabama loses, all others remain unchanged.  Clemson goes to 1, ND to 2, Georgia to 3, Bama to 4.  Would lead to some very exciting games (all scenarios will likely have that outcome, well done playoff committee), though we could be headed for an all SEC final again.  I wonder why people think there is a bias when the SEC continues to dominate other conferences…

3 - OU blows out Texas, by 30+ points, all other favorites win.  This is TOB’s least favorite scenario because it could vault OU to the 3 spot, with ND dropping to 4.  This puts ND at a great risk of getting 2012’d (losing by 40 to Bama and TOB going into hiding for 3-4 weeks).  Please don’t let this happen, I’m writing my alderman right after this article.

4 – OU loses, all others remain unchanged.  OSU jumps into the 4 spot, and we again have some solid semi-final games.

The big question about scenario 1 and 3 are how the committee values wins and losses relative to each other.  OSU has bigger wins than OU, but a far worse loss.  ND has no losses, but if OU beats the crap out of Texas, their only loss, it could be argued they have had a better season than ND.  Ultimately, college football is a sport second, entertainment first.  The question is, what is the best National Title game?  Some (Cheech) would argue the country loves seeing Clemson/BAMA.  TOB would say that is old hat, especially with Deshaun Watson in the NFL and Clemson releasing their starting QB from the beginning of the year.  The most exciting matchup would probably be Lincoln Riley/Kyler Murray (making more money than his coach with his baseball signings, they could beat that to death in the week leading up) against the old school power Alabama.  The run and gun OU team with the hot young coach who is getting recruited by every NFL team that may or may not need a coach.  Is the next McVeigh?  We must find out!  Hire him, give him 6 years $50 million!  That conversation is happening in 8-10 NFL locker rooms the last week of December.

If the committee wants all that hype (and TOB thinks they do), OU will jump ND and play Clemson.  ND will then have to win one for the Gipper to try and not get run off the field by the second quarter.

Come on Texas, TOB doesn’t ask for much…well, maybe he does, but at least keep it close!  Cover the spread and there’s no way OU can jump the Irish.  At this point, OSU cannot and will not jump OU if the Sooners win.  College football does not want another month of Urban Meyer/ Zack Smith content.  No way.

Enjoy the games, for betting purposes, TOB likes:

1. Bama to win, not cover

2. Clemson to win and cover

3.  OU to win and cover

4.  OSU to win and cover

5. Parlay all of the money lines to get decent return

6.  Pay TOB 10% (TOB not responsible if any or all of these bets lose)

Next week, we recap Championship week and hope ND has Clemson or less in the semifinal round!

GO IRISH!
